บทบาทและหน้าที่ของภาพถ่าย มีความสำคัญอย่างไร??
1. ภาพเป็นสื่อเพื่อให้ข้อมูล (Imformation) ภาพเหล่านี้เป็นภาพที่แสดงข้อเท็จจริงของสิ่งต่าง ๆ ภาพที่มุ่งเสนอข้อมูลนี้มักมุ่งให้การศึกษา ให้ผู้ดูภาพเกิดความรู้ ความเข้าใจเพิ่มขึ้น ภาพเพื่อให้ข้อมูลนี้ยังรวมไปถึงการใช้ภาพเพื่อการโฆษณาประชาสัมพันธ์ด้วย ฯลฯ
2. ภาพใช้บันทึกข้อมูล (Recording) ภาพเป็นสื่อที่ง่ายและราคาถูก สามารถใช้ถ่ายทอดข้อมูล เก็บเอกสารต่าง ๆ ได้ เช่น จัดทำแค๊ตตาล็อค การบันทึกภาพในรูปแบบของไมโครฟิล์ม การถ่ายภาพเป็นหลักฐานต่าง ๆ จากหนังสือหรือหลักฐานสำคัญ การถ่ายภาพเพื่อบันทึกข้อมูลนี้ได้อำนวยประโยชน์อย่างมหาศาล และใช้งานอย่างกว้างขวาง
3. ภาพเป็นสื่อแห่งความบันเทิง (Entertainment) คนใช้ภาพเป็นสื่อเพื่อความบันเทิงในหลายรูปแบบ ภาพถ่ายประเภทนี้มักเป็นภาพที่แสดงความสวยงาม หรือเรื่องราวที่แสดงความพึงพอใจ เช่น ภาพถ่ายครอบครัว ภาพบันทึกการท่องเที่ยว ภาพสถานที่ ดอกไม้ ฯลฯ
4. ภาพเป็นสื่อที่แสดงความรู้สึกนึกคิดของบุคคล (Self-expression) ภาพต่าง ๆ ที่เห็นอยู่ทั่วไปเป็นจำนวนมากเกิดขึ้นจากความต้องการ แสดงแนวคิดของช่างภาพ สิ่งนี้ทำให้เกิดภาพถ่ายแนวคิดสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นมากมาย ภาพเหล่านี้มักเป็นภาพศิลปที่มีคุณค่า
5. ภาพเพื่องานค้นคว้าวิจัย (Discovery) เป็นการใช้ภาพเพื่อการค้นคว้าวิจัยทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ ทั้งนี้เพราะเลนส์ของกล้องถ่ายภาพ บันทึกได้ละเอียดกว่าที่สายตามองเห็น ประกอบกับอุปกรณ์กล้องถ่ายภาพที่มีการค้นคว้าผลิตขึ้นมาทำให้ช่างภาพสามารถถ่ายภาพขยายของเชื้อโรค สามารถถ่ายภาพดวงจันทร์ที่อยู่ไกล สามารถถ่ายภาพสัตว์เล็ก ๆ ที่มองด้วยตาเปล่าไม่เห็น ภาพถ่ายเป็นสื่อแห่งการค้นคว้าวิจัย เพื่อพัฒนาคุณภาพของชีวิต
